Default Lvl 28 Beastmaster vs. lvl 12 Ranger = Instadeath

Been trying to do the "Stone Summit Beastmasters" quest from Artemis the Ranger in Traveler's Vale and my ranger/elementalist (along with his 5 henchmen and pet) get owned everytime by Thorgrim Beastlasher, a lvl 28 Beastmaster. Is this quest suppose to be this hard or is this a bug? Can anyone confirm ever completing this quest?

Hmm I must have skipped that one. If you want someone to help, let me know. My toon is a 16th R/W by the name of Sinthea Firebrand - add me to friends and if I'm online PM me. BTW - what's the reward? Do you get any skills?

Thanks for the offer. I should mention that the last time I tried the quest I was lvl 12, i'm 14 now, gonna give it another whirl see if there's any difference. And yes the reward is 350 xp and you recieve the skills Whirling Defense, Winter, and Call of Protection.

Side note: Its easy to miss Artemis the Ranger. She's lvl 2 and sits next to a spawn point for some Summit dwarves and an Ice Golem. She doesnt last long unless you approach Traveler's Vale from the Iron Horse Mine, where the quest is located.

lol... dude.. it's not that hard... just go with players... try and get two tanks ... two ele's... maybe a healer... but really.... get rid of the other Beastlashers then go for Thorgrim... they have awesome defence... but they hardly do any damage at all

So Thorgrim is suppose to be lvl 28? Well thats just great... how are us anti-social players suppose to get through missions like these? I figured that would be the answer, but was hoping for something else, you know, like a bug.

What lvl players are we talking about here? 12? 14? 16? The regular Beastmasters are pretty tame when it comes down to it, but Thorgrim can still take me down in 2-3 hits.

In addition to a decent party (I'll never understand why so many people would rather play alone with NPC's than with real people), the key to beating him is fubaring his ubernoober signet heal.

Hmm, just focus fire on his minions 1 by 1 until you've killed them all. It doesn't matter if you're at 60% DP, as you shouldn't be in melee range anywayz. Make sure he hits either Little Thom of the Figher NPC. For my friend and I, we found that even after multiple deaths, one fighter NPC + the healer was easily able to tank him. The most important part is to make sure you constantly use distracting shot to make sure he never gets a chance to heal.

Some people don't like playing with people they don't know they can trust. NPCs, while stupid, are at least trustworthy. You know that an NPC you've hired isn't going to go about deliberatly trying to sabotage the entire mission for you. People, on the other hand, do try to undercut you and stab you in the back just often enough to be a pain.

Thanks for the help all. Tried again now at 14 with a group of henchmen and no one's died yet But the battle has been raging for the past 30 mins and appears that it will continue to go on with no end in sight.
That uber-Healing Signet is now the source of all my problems. Not sure how fair it is that Thorgrim's Healing Signet doesnt have that double damage clause that a Warrior's HS has.

P.S. Thanks elcair for the distracting shot idea, gonna go try that now

Search = Good. Posted this earlier.

"I noticed a lot of groups were having issues beating the Summit Beastmaster mission that happens in Iron Horse Mine. The Summit Beastmaster is a level 28 mob and the way our group beat him (Avg person was level 11) was to pull the dwarf from another quest around the bend over and engage him with a full group + the dwarf. We initially tried without the dwarf and couldn't get him down because he heals so much. What happened is we wound up killing the other mobs around him and then had to disengage the Beastmaster (he is leashed so if you run away far enough he will stop chasing you). Then we decided to do the other quest with the Dwarf around the corner and accidentally agro'd the Beastmaster on the way back. This was a good thing because we waxed him pretty easily with the extra NPC fighting. So my suggestion would be to engage the Beastmaster and the surrounding mobs first and kill off the other mobs around him, disengage and then go get the dwarf NPC and engage him again."

Tried several searches, didnt come up with anything. Any suggestions on future searches would be nice.

Just a follow up... went back with the henchmen and my pet and used Distracting shot everytime Thorgrim attempted healing and made quick work of him. For all the work that went into him the 47 xp and 31 gp felt a little bittersweet. Thanks again for the help everyone.

I did it with the exact same thing at that lvl just fine.

2 things you can try:

Use Brawler, Enchanter, Mage, Healer, Fighter, and your pet.

Make sure to have distracting shot. He uses healing signet every other action. Just when his attack action icon starts to fade fire the distracting shot, it will cancel the healing signet.

Wash rinse repeat.
---------------------------------

If you have him by himself and your healer is alive you can live indefinitely. Before I came up with this strategy I left the computer for 25 minutes and I still hadnt killed him.

I did it with a mate and lotsa henchmen, if ur a ranger use the distracting shot skill when its healing itself, this will stop it healing so u can can just pound it with everything u've got till its dead, remember to use distracting shot wen it tries to heal its self!

Yeah, I believe the point of this particular quest is to teach people how to use distracting shot or something else more clever than just "let's beat on it until it dies", and to show people not to be intimidated by high level monsters, as least while they're alone. Six level 8 creatures are a heck of a lot more powerful than a single level 28 creature.

You can also use Rust or other Signet nullifying skills to stop him. The mobs around him are much tougher than he actually is.

I helped a guildmate do it with a couple of us from the guild and the rest of the group as NPC's. We stomped him pretty good even with being Level 11's and 12's.

Whenever I attack something high end I don't do the interupt way, instead what I do is toss Life Siphon on him while using default attack, then I let everything rip. Fire Storm, Deathly Swarm, Phoenix and Fireball (takes a few seconds for me to be able to get the last spell off due to needing to recharge a bit).

Does leave me very open to attacks if it doesn't get him real low (or kill him), but so far it's something that has worked for me to date.

its not so tough. take out his minions and then concentrate on him (and go with 6 players; henchies are useless against him lol). Depending on the strength of the peopel in the party and what skills they have, it can take from 3 mins to 30 mins to kill him off! but he tends not to attack too much once his minions are dead
